What you can and cannot raise money for

Almost any good cause is welcome, for people of every faith and of none. These are the limits, and they apply to everyone equally.

Not allowed

  • Weapons, ammunition or military equipment.
  • Anything that benefits a person, group or government on an official sanctions list, or sends money to sanctioned or high-risk jurisdictions.
  • Adult content or adult services.
  • Terrorism or violent extremism, including campaigns that glorify an attack or its perpetrators.
  • Hate or discrimination against people because of religion or belief, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. Raising money for a faith purpose is welcome; raising money against a group is not.
  • Legal defence funds that celebrate or deny a violent crime. A neutral legal defence fund can be allowed after review.
  • Unproven or dangerous medical treatments, conversion practices, or campaigns against vaccination.
  • Illegal drugs, gambling stakes, or paying debts that come from a crime.
  • Anything that promises donors money back, interest or a return. That is an investment, not a donation.
  • Financing political parties or election campaigns.
  • Campaigns that target, shame or expose a private person.
  • Anything else that is illegal where the organiser or the beneficiary lives.

Allowed after extra checks

These causes are welcome but a person checks them more closely before they go live, because they attract the most fraud or involve vulnerable people:

  • Emergencies and disasters.
  • Medical treatment, including treatment abroad.
  • Humanitarian aid in conflict zones. We verify the organisation that delivers help rather than banning regions.
  • Funerals and memorials.
  • Causes about children.
  • Causes where the money is for someone other than the organiser.
  • Building projects for places of worship.

Stripe, our payment provider, has its own list of restricted activities, which also applies.
